UST Basketball Receives SCAC Conference Honors

CONWAY, AR – The University of St. Thomas Men's Basketball program headlined the 2025-26 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) postseason awards, beginning with top honors for its coaching staff following another sucessful season.

Head coach Anthony Medina was named the 2025-26 SCAC Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the Celts to a 24-1 overall record and a perfect 16-0 mark in conference play, earning the Gold Division's No. 1 seed. St. Thomas is ranked No. 5 nationally — the highest ranking in program history — and became just the third team in SCAC history to finish the regular season undefeated in league play. In his 11th season, Medina surpassed 200 career wins and now owns a 96-12 SCAC record, giving him the highest conference winning percentage (.889) among coaches with five or more years in the league.

Coach of the Year- Medina

On the court, senior guard Angel Johnson earned SCAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and All-SCAC First Team recognition after another elite defensive season. Johnson leads the conference with 71 steals after setting the league's single-season record last year and also tops the SCAC with 123 assists. His defensive presence has helped power St. Thomas to rank ninth nationally in scoring defense (62.1 ppg) while leading the conference in field goal percentage defense and assist-to-turnover ratio. Johnson's award marks the fourth time a Celt has earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Junior guard Corey Thompson joined Johnson on the All-SCAC First Team after averaging 15.5 points per game and ranking third in the conference in steals. Thompson's scoring consistency and two-way presence gave the Celts a dynamic backcourt combination that opponents struggled to contain throughout the year. Thompson was also named Offensive Player of the Week twice, along with Defensive Player of the Week.

Senior forward Reyce Allen earned All-SCAC Third Team recognition for his steady contributions in the frontcourt, while sophomore forward Charles Gitonga received Honorable Mention honors after collecting votes from the league's coaches.

With Coaching Staff of the Year recognition, a Defensive Player of the Year, and multiple All-SCAC selections, the Celts capped off a season that reflected the strength, depth, and championship mindset of the St. Thomas Men's Basketball program.
