Anthony Medina: "Passing Torches and Breaking Records" BOLD Interview

Anthony Medina, a native of El Paso, Texas, and raised in Houston, is the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of St. Thomas (UST). Medina is a former UST player himself, having played at The Woodlands High School before playing three seasons under the current Athletic Director, Todd Smith. During his collegiate career, Medina earned two-time All-Conference honors in the Red River Athletic Conference, shot over 40% from three-point range for his career, and graduated as the university’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, and three-pointers made.

As a coach, Medina has transformed the UST Men’s Basketball program over the past decade. In the 2015-2016 season, the team went 10-18. By 2024-2025, Medina led them to a 26-3 record, winning the SCAC regular season and tournament titles and hosting the NCAA tournament on their home court. In that time, accumulating an overall record of 188-84 (69%), including a record of 126-25 (83%) since the transition to the NCAA DIII and an 80-12 (87%) record in the SCAC. Under his leadership, the team claimed multiple SCAC titles, earned NCAA tournament bids, and made history with undefeated conference records and landmark wins.

Off the court, Anthony is a devoted family man. He is married to his wife, Samone, and they have two sons: Memphis, who is 10, and Julian, who is 6. Together, they share a love for the game and the vibrant Houston community that they call home.
