Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – UST baseball team split a conference doubleheader against McMurry, earning a 3-2 extra-inning victory in game one before falling 2-1 in game two. The Celts overall standings move to a 4-9 record with a conference record of 3-6. St. Thomas showcased strong pitching performances in both games as the series featured two tightly contested matchups.
Game 1: UST 3, McMurry 2
St. Thomas struck first in the third inning when Gage Kimble doubled to drive in Eduardo Tamez, giving the Celts a 1-0 advantage. McMurry answered in the bottom of the third inning, capitalizing on a defensive miscue to tie the game before adding an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.
The Celts responded in the fourth inning as Justin Ogle launched a solo home run to even the score at 2-2. From that point forward, both pitching staffs settled in and kept the game tied through regulation.
The decisive moment came in the 10th inning when Jace Christian came around to score on a McMurry error, giving the Celts a 3-2 lead. St. Thomas closed the door in the bottom of the tenth inning to secure the extra-inning victory.
Armando Rocha and Gilberto Arreozola combined to limit McMurry to five hits while working out of key situations. St. Thomas collected 11 hits offensively, highlighted by three-hit performances from Zach Cline and Eduardo Tamez.
Game 2: McMurry 2, UST 1
Game two proved to be another pitcher's duel. Michael Martinez delivered six strong innings for the Celts, striking out 10 and allowing just one run on three hits.
McMurry broke through in the fifth inning with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. St. Thomas answered in the seventh inning when Chris Johnson scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1.
The War Hawks regained the lead in the eighth inning with an RBI single to edge ahead 2-1. The Celts threatened late, drawing walks and putting runners on base, but were unable to push past McMurry as they held on to claim the win.
