Celts Ranked Third in SCAC Preseason Poll

HOUSTON, TX-- Excitement is building in Houston as the University of St. Thomas Women's Basketball team has been picked third in the 2025-26 SCAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, marking a strong vote of confidence for a program on the rise.

After a season that saw the Celts return to the SCAC Tournament and post their most wins since 2019-20, UST looks ready to keep the momentum rolling under head coach Mansa El, now entering her third year at the helm. The Celts finished 14-10 overall and 12-4 in SCAC play last year, showing consistency and resilience throughout conference action.

Leading the charge is senior guard Amyia Bowie, who returns after an impressive season where she led the SCAC in both assists (94) and steals (53) in conference play. Bowie also averaged 8.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, proving to be one of the most well-rounded guards in the league. She'll be joined by a core of returning All-SCAC performers who bring veteran leadership and energy to a team ready to compete at the top of the standings.

Coach El-Ward has steadily built a competitive and confident squad, going 17-15 in conference play over her first two seasons. This year, the Celts aim to take the next step—contending for a conference title and making a deep postseason run. "It's a great step forward for our program to have a positive outlook from the rest of the conference," said El. "But we are not yet satisfied in our attempt to be champions."

The SCAC preseason poll placed Texas Lutheran and Colorado College in the top two spots, but St. Thomas isn't backing down. With an experienced roster, strong team chemistry, and a fast-paced style of play, the Celts have their eyes set on shaking up the conference order.

The 2025-26 season officially tips off Friday, November 8, as the Celts begin their journey toward another standout year. The SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament will take place February 27 through March 1, hosted by Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.

Expect big things this season from a St. Thomas team that's hungry, battle-tested, and ready to rise.
