SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team put together a strong performance in their exhibition matchup against Division I opponent, the University of the Incarnate Word, ending 86–72 on the road Monday night.
The Celts came out with energy, opening the game with back-to-back three-pointers from Kenna Gibson and Yasmine Aly to grab an early lead. Incarnate Word responded with a late first-quarter run to edge ahead 24–21.
In the second quarter, Gibson and Amyia Bowie kept the offense rolling, knocking down key shots to keep UST close. The Cardinals found their rhythm midway through the frame, taking a 45–32 lead into halftime. After the break, Laura Jones and Gibson connected on crucial baskets to trim the deficit, but UIW maintained its edge to lead 64–49 heading into the final period.
UST continued to battle in the fourth, fueled by Bowie's scoring burst and Branasia Brazelton's defensive energy. The Celts put together an 8–0 run late in the game to close the gap, but the Cardinals held on to secure the 86–72 win.
Kenna Gibson led the way for St. Thomas with 22 points on 8-13 shots, including 6-8 from the 3 pointer and Amyia Bowie closely following with 21 points, shooting 4-5 from three-point range along with seven steals and two assists.
