HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas will host one of their biggest sports weekends in recent memory, as three sports make their home debuts and the school's basketball teams host two important doubleheaders.

The weekend's events begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. when the Celts basketball teams host Trinity (Texas) in a doubleheader. The Friday doubleheader also marks UST's Celts 2 Cure games, a Coach to Cure event that helps raise awareness and research money to combat Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The Celt basketball teams are making a push for the USCAA postseason. The 17-1 Celt lead the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, while the 14-4 Celt women meet Trinity in a battle of the top two teams in the conference.

Saturday will mark the home debuts of UST's inaugural tennis teams as well as the return of UST baseball, which is fielding a varsity program for the first time since 1969. The Celt baseball teams will open the season with a doubleheader against Loyola (La.) on Saturday at St. Thomas High School; first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the varsity tennis teams will host Southwestern (Texas) in SCAC matches at Memorial Park. The men's and women's dual matches are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Last week, the tennis teams debuted at East Texas Baptist, with the Celt men claiming a 6-3 win.
