Box Score HOUSTON, TX-- St. Thomas women's basketball team secured its first conference win of the season on Thursday night, holding off the University of Dallas for a 66-62 victory at home. With the win, the Celts improved to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in SCAC .
UST set the tone early in the opening quarter by attacking the paint and applying defensive pressure. Amyia Bowie and Macie Whitfield scored early inside, while Jaydia Morris and Laura Jones sparked transition opportunities with steals. Despite Dallas responding late, UST closed the quarter strong and carried a 21-17 lead into the second period.
The second quarter turned into a back-and-forth battle as Dallas began to find its rhythm offensively. Kameron Goodman provided an immediate spark off the bench, scoring multiple times in the paint and finishing the half with strong drives to the basket. The Tigers briefly took the lead midway through the quarter, but the Celts answered back and the score was 43-42 headed into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Celts delivered one of their strongest stretches of the night. Kenna Gibson and Laura Jones knocked down consecutive three-pointers to ignite the offense, while Bowie continued to pressure defensively, forcing turnovers that led to easy transition points. Although Dallas responded late, the Celts maintained a 57-52 edge heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter tested UST's composure as Dallas chipped away at the lead with steady scoring in the paint. Whitfield delivered a key basket inside to push the margin back to six, and Brazelton came up with crucial steals that resulted in fast-break points. In the final minute, Bowie stepped to the free-throw line and calmly knocked down clutch shots to seal the win. Defensive rebounds and late stops allowed the Celts to close out the 66-62.
Amyia Bowie led the Celts with 14 points, adding 7 rebounds and 2 steals while drawing fouls throughout the game. Macie Whitfield followed with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, getting a double-double. Kameron Goodman made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Branasia Brazelton contributed 9 points and four steals, while Laura Jones added 6 points.
