Former Celts Guard Angel Johnson Joins UST Men's Basketball Staff

HOUSTON – The University of St. Thomas men's basketball program has added former Celts guard Angel Johnson to its coaching staff. Johnson will specialize in elite player development, and he steps into the role just months after finishing a standout playing career in a Celts uniform.

A Houston native and Atascocita High School graduate, the 6-foot-2 guard wore No. 10 for St. Thomas from 2022-23 through 2025-26. He grew from a freshman contributor into one of the team's most dependable players, starting all 86 games over his final three seasons and scoring 923 career points. His junior season was his best as a scorer: he averaged 13.6 points per game while shooting 49.8% from the field and 39.7% from three. As a senior, he took on more of a playmaking role and averaged 5.0 assists per game. Along the way, he also earned an SCAC award.

That firsthand experience is at the heart of what Johnson brings to the staff. He knows the skills, habits, and mindset it takes to compete at a high level because he lived it on the same court only a season ago. His approach to development is hands-on and personal. It includes individualized development plans, film study, competitive training, and detailed feedback, all designed to help each student-athlete reach his full potential.

Beyond the skill work, Johnson is focused on developing complete players and building a culture centered on growth, discipline, accountability, confidence, teamwork, and excellence. He brings those values to the program where he built his own game.
