The Celts received 243 points from the national panel of 25 coaches, sports information directors and media members. Mary Washington is No. 1 with 21 first-place votes, followed by Christopher Newport, Hood, Emory and Gustavus Adolphus to round out the top five.
St. Thomas comes off the best season in program history. The Celts went 29-2, swept the SCAC regular season and tournament titles, and made their first-ever NCAA Division III Sweet 16, where they beat Washington University to reach the Elite Eight before falling to Christopher Newport.
The Celts will see some familiar names in the rankings. SCAC rival Trinity (Texas), which UST beat in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament, is No. 12. Washington University is No. 10, and Christopher Newport is No. 2.
St. Thomas returns senior guard Corey Thompson, who was named to the D3hoops.com Preseason All-America Fourth Team earlier Wednesday. Thompson averaged 15.4 points and 2.0 steals per game last season and earned SCAC All-First Team honors.
