HOUSTON, Texas — Elijah Emerson of University of St. Thomas, a sophomore from Katy, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for meets ran Friday, September 11th through Saturday, September 12th.

Emerson turned in a statement performance right out of the gate, putting together one of the most impressive individual showings of the young season at the 50th Rice Invitational. Toeing the line against a stacked field that featured Division I competition, the sophomore never let the moment get too big, settling into a strong early pace before methodically working his way to the front of the pack.

Emerson crossed the finish line first overall on September 11, 2026, clocking the 5.2k course in a blistering 16:01.3 to claim the individual title outright. Running with poise well beyond his years, he outdueled a deep and talented field to secure the win, showcasing the kind of speed and composure that has SCAC coaches taking notice early in the season.

As individual he assisted the Celts as a team, propelling St. Thomas to a solid 3rd place finish at the meet — no small feat against the level of competition on hand. With Emerson setting the pace at the front, the Celts showed they can hang with some of the region's best programs.

Fresh off a signature win to open the year, Emerson and the Celts will look to build on this early momentum as the cross country season continues to take shape.
