The University of St. Thomas Softball program will kick off its inaugural season Saturday as they travel to Longview to take on the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets.
After a year long process of recruiting, planning and constructing the first ever softball program, The Celts are eager to hit the softball diamond. "We are very excited to get these first games under our belt" Head Coach Angela Froboese said. Froboese is no stranger to building programs from the ground up as she started the softball program at fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member, Southwestern University. With also having five SCAC Softball Coach of the Year honors under her belt, she is well equipped to build a strong softball program for the Celts.
The Softball team features 18 newcomers from all over Texas, with the majority if the team being underclassmen. "This team has been putting in a lot of work and we see small improvements every single day" Froboese said. "The future is bright in the program and we can't wait to get it going."
The Celts are taking on a formidable opponent in Letourneau. The Yellow Jackets were 5-1 in conference play when their season was cancelled last season due to the pandemic. The first pitch for this regional matchup will be at 2:00PM on Saturday, followed by game two at 4:00PM
