He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of St. Thomas and holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Colorado. His academic career spans both the United States and Mexico, where he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in economics and Latin American studies. He previously directed the university's Latin American Studies Program and has been deeply involved in developing and leading study-abroad initiatives as well as participating in international academic programs.
His research focuses on remittances, particularly within the Mexico–U.S. corridor, and reflects his broader commitment to global education and student engagement. Known for his dedication to student success, Dr. Balderas has built a reputation for supporting students both academically and personally throughout their educational journeys.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Balderas has a lifelong connection to athletics. A former collegiate soccer player in his home country, he remains an avid supporter of the sport and frequently connects with students through their shared passion for competition and teamwork.
"I am truly honored and excited to take on the role of Faculty Athletic Representative," Dr. Balderas said. "This role provides a meaningful opportunity to support our student-athletes, promote academic excellence, and strengthen the connection between athletics and the educational mission of the university. As someone who has experienced collegiate athletics firsthand, I value the balance between academics and sports, and I am committed to supporting our student-athletes as they excel in both areas."
University of St. Thomas Athletic Director Todd Smith praised the appointment and emphasized the importance of the FAR role within the department's mission.
We are thrilled that Dr. Balderas has accepted this role. He is an active, highly respected, and visible presence on our campus who is deeply committed to student experience and success. We are fortunate to welcome him to the Celt Athletic Family.", said Athletic Director Todd Smith.
