HOUSTON – During the University of St. Thomas Athletics Sports Banquet held on Tuesday, April 28, celebrating the 2025-26 academic year, senior Angel Johnson was named the 2026 Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
The award is presented annually to the student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding achievement in athletic competition, academics and service to the University community. Johnson's remarkable career and leadership on and off the court made him a clear choice for one of the highest honors awarded by the University of St. Thomas Athletic Department.
A cornerstone of one of the most successful eras in University of St. Thomas men's basketball program history, Johnson played a pivotal role in the Celts compiling an extraordinary 98-16 overall record during his career.
This season, Johnson helped guide St. Thomas to a 29-2 overall record, a perfect run through Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, the conference tournament championship and a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Elite Eight.
Known for his impact on both ends of the floor, Johnson led the team in assists and steals while averaging 10 points per game. His all-around performance and steady leadership helped elevate the Celts to one of the finest seasons in program history.
Johnson's outstanding campaign earned him First Team All-SCAC honors and SCAC Defensive Player of the Year recognition. He was also selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region First Team, further highlighting his consistency and influence throughout the season.
Throughout his career, Johnson has been recognized not only for his athletic accomplishments but also for his ability to make those around him better. His leadership, defensive intensity and team-first approach have helped establish a standard of excellence for the men's basketball program.
Johnson's selection as Male Student-Athlete of the Year reflects the tremendous impact he has had on University of St. Thomas Athletics and the legacy he leaves as one of the most accomplished student-athletes in recent school history.
