Celts Sweep Schreiner In Double-Header

Kerrville, TX - The University of St. Thomas' softball team earned a pair of hard-fought victories over Schreiner University, defeating the Mountaineers 5–3 and 5–1. The Celts combined early production with timely late-inning hitting, building leads and pulling away in key moments while using strong defensive play to maintain control in both contests.  With the pair of wins, the Celts improve their overall record to 17-5 and are now 15-2 in conference.

Game 1: UST 5, Schreiner 3

St. Thomas opened the scoring in the top of third inning when Samantha Crumrin hit an RBI single to center field, driving in Savana Henken to give the Celts a 1–0 lead.

The Celts extended their advantage in the fourth inning with a big offensive moment. Rebecca Archibald delivered a triple to left field, bringing home Gigi Rivera, Kianah Johnson, and Avery Pinz to extend their lead to 4–0.

St. Thomas added another run in the top of the seventh inning when Johnson hit an RBI single to center field to score Ciaira Gonzalez, extending the lead to 5–0.

Schreiner mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 5–3, but the Celts held firm to close out the victory.

Game 2: UST 5, Schreiner 1

St. Thomas struck first at the start of the game when Chloe Bennett singled to center field, bringing home Rebecca Archibald for an early 1–0 lead.

Schreiner answered in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on a defensive miscue to even the score at 1–1.

The game remained tied until the sixth inning when the Celts delivered the decisive blow. Ana Zozaya launched a three-run home run, scoring Ciaira Gonzalez and Avery Pinz to give St. Thomas a 4–1 advantage.

The Celts added another run in the top of the seventh inning when Bennett hit a sacrifice RBI ground out to bring Archibald home, extending the lead to 5–1.

St. Thomas held Schreiner scoreless after the first inning and solidified the victory.

The University of St. Thomas looks ahead to sweep the series against Schreiner University tomorrow, March 22, in Kerrville, TX.  The first pitch is set to be thrown at 12PM.
