HOUSTON, TX– The University of St. Thomas softball team kicked off its three-game weekend series at home against McMurry University with an impressive doubleheader sweep. The Celts captured a 9-4 victory in Game 1 and carried that momentum into a 3-1 win in Game 2, starting the series strong.
Game 1: UST 9, McM 4 (7 innings)
St. Thomas responded quickly after McMurry struck first. In the bottom of the opening inning,
Samantha Crumrin singled to center field to drive in
Savana Henken and
Rebecca Archibald, giving the Celts an early advantage.
Kianah Johnson followed with a fielder's choice that brought in two more runs, allowing
Viviana Vargas and Crumrin to score and extend the lead to 4-1.
After the Warhawks evened the score in the second inning, the Celts answered immediately. Crumrin delivered another RBI single to right field, scoring Archibald and putting UST back on top.
The Celts continued to add on as
Chloe Bennett singled to left field in the fourth to bring home Archibald once again. In the fifth,
Ana Zozaya added an RBI single to score Ciara Gonzalez, stretching the lead to 7-4.
St. Thomas sealed the win in the sixth inning when Bennett doubled to center field, driving in Henken and Archibald to secure the 9-4 victory.
Game 2: UST 3, McM 1 (7 innings)
The Celts carried their energy into Game 2, striking early in the first inning. Crumrin singled to shortstop to score Archibald for the game's first run. Ciara Gonzalez followed with a triple to right center, driving in Crumrin and giving UST a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Henken doubled to center field and advanced to third, bringing home
Kianah Johnson to extend the advantage to 3-0.
St. Thomas maintained control the rest of the way, holding off McMurry to secure the 3-1 victory and complete the doubleheader sweep.
