Celts Fall to ETBU

HOUSTON, TX-- St. Thomas baseball team returned to action Tuesday night at Constellation Field in Sugar Land but fell to East Texas Baptist, 7–0. The nonconference matchup served as a midweek test as the Celts now turn their full attention back to conference play.

East Texas Baptist struck first in the second inning with an RBI double to take an early 1–0 lead. The game remained within reach for several innings as the Celts battled to generate offense and keep pressure on the Tigers.

UST created an opportunity in the bottom of the third inning when Jon Torres put the ball in play, allowing Gage Gustafson to advance to third base. The Celts threatened to break through but were unable to bring the run home, keeping the contest within a single run heading into the middle innings.

The Tigers extended their lead in the seventh, capitalizing on a defensive miscue that resulted in multiple unearned runs. East Texas Baptist added three more runs in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly, a wild pitch, and another sacrifice fly to stretch the advantage to 7–0.

Despite the final score, the Celts continued to compete throughout the night and looked to build momentum as they prepare for an important conference series ahead.

St. Thomas shifts its focus back to conference play on Friday, February 20, when the Celts take on Texas Lutheran in a series matchup at Reckling Park on the campus of Rice University. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
