HOUSTON, TX – The St. Thomas Men's basketball team continued its 18-game winning streak Friday evening, conquering Texas Lutheran 77–63 at the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center. The victory lifts the Celts to 21–1 overall and a dominant 13–0 in SCAC play.
UST responded to Texas Lutheran's early shooting with composure. Angel Johnson set the tone with strong drives and finishes in traffic, while Corey Thompson knocked down a tough pull-up to halt a brief Bulldogs run. Nathan Kongolo provided a spark with a corner three and a strong take to the rim, and Charles Gitonga controlled the glass on both ends.
Midway through the half, Garrett Rodgers came off the bench and delivered instant offense, scoring on back-to-back possessions to push the momentum firmly in the Celts' favor. UST closed the half on a surge capped by a Thompson finish in transition, taking a 40–35 lead going into the break.
Texas Lutheran opened the second half with energy, but the Celts responded with disciplined execution. Gitonga powered inside for a bucket and followed with a key offensive rebound, while Jaden Ross converted a timely three to stretch the lead.
As the game tightened, UST leaned on its depth while maintaining composure. Nicholas Buffalo made his presence felt with hustle plays and trips to the free-throw line, and Rodgers continued his efficient night with a strong drive that helped seal the outcome. The Celts closed the game with steady defense and control in the paint to secure the 77–63 win.
Thompson led the Celts with 15 points, while Johnson added 14 points and key baskets in both halves. Kongolo chipped in 11 points, and Rodgers provided a big lift off the bench with 12 points. Gitonga anchored the interior with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
