Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Hendrix

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – St. Thomas baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Hendrix on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium. The Celts powered past the Warriors 9–5 in Game 1 before falling 4–3 in a tightly contested Game 2. With the split, UST moves to 3–3 overall and 2–1 in conference play.

Game 1: UST 9, Hendrix 5

St. Thomas came out swinging in the opener and wasted no time setting the tone. Ryan Ratajczak launched a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Celts on the board, bringing home Jon Torres for an early 2–0 lead.

After Hendrix trimmed the deficit in the second, UST responded immediately. Tyler Mills delivered a two-RBI single to left field, scoring Jace Christian and Gabe Garner to keep momentum in the Celts' dugout. The Warriors continued to chip away, eventually taking a 5–4 lead in the fifth, but St. Thomas had another surge waiting.

In the seventh, Ratajczak stepped up again and crushed his second home run of the afternoon to even the score at 5–5. The Celts kept applying pressure as Aryan Chopra scored on a wild pitch to reclaim the lead, and Christian added a sacrifice fly to extend it to 7–5. UST added insurance in the eighth when Lampson reached on an error, allowing Torres to score and push the advantage further.

The late offensive explosion proved to be the difference as the Celts closed out the 9–5 victory behind timely hitting and relentless pressure.

Game 2: Hendrix 4, UST 3

The nightcap saw Hendrix jump out to an early lead with runs in the first and third innings, putting the Celts in comeback mode.

UST answered in the eighth with a determined rally. Mills ignited the surge with an RBI double to left field, scoring Christian and cutting the deficit to two. Joseph Sanchez followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Torres, and moments later Ratajczak reached on an error that allowed Mills to score and tie the game at 3–3.

With momentum on their side, the Celts looked poised to complete the comeback, but Hendrix pushed across the go-ahead run in the ninth on an infield single. St. Thomas battled until the final out but came up just short in the 4–3 loss.

Up Next

The Celts will return to action on Tuesday, February 17th, when they take on ETBU in another home matchup at Constellation Field. UST will look to build on its strong conference start as the season continues.
