HOUSTON, TX-- The University of St. Thomas Athletics will host a special evening of remembrance, recognition, and purpose on Friday, February 13, as part of Celts to Cure Weekend, honoring the lasting legacy of
Dr. Jack Follis while continuing the mission inspired by alumnus David Gonzalez.
The evening will begin with a reception celebrating Dr. Follis from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. upstairs in Scanlan. Immediately following, a ceremony honoring Dr. Follis will take place at 5:15 p.m. prior to the start of the men's basketball game.
Dr. Follis made a meaningful and lasting impact on UST Athletics and the broader campus community through his dedication, leadership, and commitment to student-athletes. This celebration serves as an opportunity for staff, faculty, students, alumni, and supporters to reflect on his contributions and the role he played in shaping the Celt experience.
The evening is also part of Celts to Cure Weekend, an initiative that began as a personal mission of University of St. Thomas alumnus David Gonzalez, Class of 2020. Diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness and affects approximately one in every 5,000 males, David sought to bring awareness and advocacy to the UST community.
Inspired by the national Coach to Cure initiative, David partnered with UST Athletics to create Celts to Cure, uniting student-athletes, SAAC, and the campus community in support of those impacted by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. What began as one alumnus' vision has grown into a defining movement within UST Athletics.
During the game, UST will honor the life and legacy of David Gonzalez, whose courage, determination, and leadership continue to inspire the Celt community. A commemorative plaque will be presented in his honor, recognizing his lasting impact on the University of St. Thomas and the Celts to Cure movement. Commemorative T-shirts and additional items supporting Celts to Cure will be available throughout the evening.
This night represents more than competition. It is a celebration of legacy, community, and purpose, reflecting what it truly means to be a Celt.
UST Athletics invites all members of the campus community to attend, show their support, and be part of this meaningful evening. So Join Us Feb 13th at 5 PM to get the celebration going!
