HOUSTON, TX-- UST Men's basketball team delivered a statement win on the road Saturday night, defeating Concordia University Texas, 81–79, in Austin. The victory keeps the Celts unbeaten in conference play and moves UST to 18–1 overall and 9–0 in the SCAC, while handing Concordia its first conference loss of the season.
The opening half was played at a fast pace, with both teams trading baskets and momentum. Concordia struck first, but UST quickly responded behind strong interior play from Angel Johnson and Charles Gitonga. Gitonga energized the Celts with a pair of dunks midway through the half, while Reyce Allen and Jaden Ross added transition buckets to keep the score tight.
UST began to gain momentum late in the half, using defensive pressure to force turnovers and convert fast-break opportunities. Nathan Kongolo and Johnson combined to close the half strong, helping the Celts take a slim 42–41 lead into the break after a last-second three by Concordia.
The second half remained just as intense, with neither team able to pull away. UST leaned on balanced scoring and steady execution, as Allen repeatedly attacked the paint while Gitonga controlled the glass. Corey Thompson and Danny Canul knocked down key free throws to maintain a narrow advantage during several Concordia runs.
With the score tied late, the Celts stayed composed in the final minutes. Thompson and Johnson converted at the free-throw line, and UST's defense forced a crucial stop in the closing seconds. Concordia's final three-point attempt missed, sealing the 81–79 road win for the Celts in a highly contested conference showdown.
Reyce Allen led the Celts with 18 points on efficient shooting, going 7-of-10 from the field. Angel Johnson followed with 14 points while also contributing seven assists and multiple steals. Charles Gitonga recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the paint on both ends. Corey Thompson added 12 points, including several clutch free throws down the stretch.
