MONTGOMERY,AL-- St. Thomas volleyball team kept their undefeated streak alive, battling through five sets to defeat Millsaps College in the Montgomery Invitational. With the 3-2 victory (25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 13-25, 15-13), the Celts improved their record to 5-0 on the season.
The Celts came out strong in the opening frame, using a mix of kills from Brooke Barnes, Ariana Willis, and Jazilyn Davis along with Millsaps errors to build a 10-4 lead. UST continued to control the pace, extending their lead and closing the set 25-16.
Millsaps responded in the second set with energy of their own. Despite the Celts pushing ahead 15-12, the Majors rallied late to grab momentum and even the match with a 25-23 win.
Regrouping in the third, UST regained control behind the offensive power of Alexis Bodunrin and Tasmine Maxwell. Their attacks created separation at 13-9, and the Celts never looked back, claiming the set 25-19.
The fourth belonged to Millsaps, as the Majors jumped on errors and found success at the net. Despite the Celts' early 6-2 advantage, Millsaps stormed back and finished the frame 25-13, forcing a decisive fifth set.
In the deciding frame, both teams traded blows in a tense back-and-forth battle. Jazilyn Davis provided the spark with a kill to erase an early Millsaps lead, while Bodunrin and Willis added key attacks to push UST ahead 8-6 at the side switch. Though Millsaps fought to within one late, Davis sealed the win with a decisive final kill, giving the Celts the 15-13 victory.
Bodunrin led the way with 14 kills, followed closely by Davis with 12 and Willis with 10. Noor Haydari, Carly Lange, and Jada Stallworth each added an ace. Davis also posted three blocks, while Haydari and Maxwell tallied two apiece. At the setter spot, Mia Medina dished out 23 assists, with Jade Stallworth adding 16. Defensively, Lange anchored the back row with a team-high 28 digs, while Bodunrin collected 23 and Medina chipped in six.
