UST Take Series Finale Over Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – St. Thomas Baseball team traveled to face Southwestern University on Tuesday afternoon for a makeup game originally postponed due to weather. With the 10-6 victory, the Celts wrapped up the three-game series against the Pirates and now shift their attention to an important home finale this weekend. With the win, the Celts complete the three-game set and improve to 19-12 overall and 17-7 in conference.

St. Thomas jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. After Alex Trinh scored on an error, Gabe Garner drove in Dillon McKee with an RBI single to give the Celts a 2-0 edge. The Pirates answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, but the Celts weren't done scoring.

In the third inning, Garner came through again with a two-RBI single to center, plating McKee and Trinh. Adam Benavidez added to the damage with a base hit that brought in Garner, making it 5-2. Garner ended the day with three hits and three RBIs.

St. Thomas padded its lead in the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of Southwestern errors. Ryan Ratajczak reached on a miscue from the pitcher and advanced all the way to third, bringing home both Andersen and Garner in the process. Moments later, Jon Torres delivered a single to left to score Ratajczak and make it 8-2.

Southwestern cut the deficit to four with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, but the Celts responded again in the seventh. Rey Izaguirre came through with a clutch single to right center, driving in Torres and Ratajczak to extend the lead to 10-4.

The Pirates added two more runs in the eighth—including one on a passed ball—but couldn't catch the Celts.
