ELYSSA RODARTE OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS,
a junior on the women's cross country and track and field teams from Sugar Land, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 17.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
Elyssa Rodarte is committed to excellence both as a student-athlete and as a campus leader. Majoring in Criminology with a minor in Psychology, Elyssa aspires to enter the police academy and pursue a career as a detective—reflecting her passion for service and protecting her community.
On campus, she plays a major role in her teams' social media presence for both cross country and track, managing content and running some of the programs' platforms. She is also an active member of the student-led organization known as Celts Sports Association, where she first served as treasurer and now leads as the Director of Recreational Trips, organizing on- and off-campus experiences that bring students together. In addition, Elyssa works at the Jerabeck Athletic and Activity Center as the student manager, assisting with student hiring and supporting the daily operations of the facility.
Elyssa finds joy in giving back, especially through creating meaningful opportunities for others. "I get to put on certain events for our community—and our community can come to these events and get a chance to feel belonged and enjoy themselves. Not only is them enjoying themselves a good thing, but it also gives me joy knowing I'm able to be a part of something great!" she shared.
Her leadership roles have helped her grow into a better person, shaping well-rounded qualities that extend into her academic, athletic, and professional development. She sees these lessons reflected in her daily life and throughout her involvement on campus, especially in how she has led her cross-country team this season. "I've gotten the opportunity to lead my team this year, and that definitely would not have happened if I didn't become a student leader on campus and grow into the person I have become!" Rodarte reflected.
Elyssa's dedication to leadership, community, and personal growth makes her a standout candidate not just of SCAC Character & Community, but a well rounded example of what it means to be a leader at UST.
