James Healy joined the University of St. Thomas (Houston) men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in 2025.
Healy brings a well-rounded background to Coach Medina’s staff, combining collegiate and professional playing experience, two years of NCAA Division II coaching, and recent player development work across multiple levels. After completing his collegiate playing career in 2017, he spent the next two seasons (2017–18 and 2018–19) as an assistant coach at Chadron State College (NCAA Division II, RMAC), helping guide the program to its best conference finish in seven years while earning his MBA.
A former two-year captain and starter at New Mexico Highlands University (NCAA Division II), Healy led the Cowboys in three-pointers made his senior season while shooting 40.3% from beyond the arc and 92.9% from the free-throw line. He was named RMAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned First Team All-Academic honors with a 4.0 GPA. His collegiate career also included time at Concordia–St. Paul (NCAA Division II) and Otero Junior College (NJCAA Division I), where he was an Academic All-American.
In 2019, Healy began his professional playing career in China, competing in professional commercial games against the Qatar National Team, Lithuanian National Team, and the Bayi Rockets of the Chinese Basketball Association. In early 2020, he played for BC Gyumri in the Armenian A League, helping secure the team’s first win of the season before COVID-19 ended league play.
Over the past two years, Healy has worked in player development, training athletes at all levels—from youth players to professionals—while continuing to study and refine advanced shooting mechanics and skill acquisition methods.
