SAN ANTONIO, TX-- St. Thomas' Volleyball team battled Washington University in St. Louis in a three-set match falling 3-0 by scores of 17-25, 16-25, and 17-25. The Celts continued to battle throughout the match, making late pushes in each of the final two sets before Washington closed out the frames. The result moves the Celts with a 1-3 overall record on the season.
In the opening set, UST fell behind early but answered with kills from Audrey Cataline, Sydney Nevill, and Alexis Bodunrin to stay within reach. Washington built its lead to 15-8 before the Celts responded with a kill from Ariana Willis. Cataline and Katelyn Marti added kills as UST continued to battle, and a late push featuring two blocks from Noor Haydari and Bodunrin followed by a Bodunrin kill brought the Celts within 24-17 before Washington closed the set.
UST opened the second set with a 2-0 lead after a kill from Willis and a service ace from Jada Stallworth. Washington answered to take a 5-3 advantage, but Bodunrin's kill helped UST even the set at 5-5. The Bears then extended their lead to 9-5 before Willis answered with another kill. Stallworth added a second service ace as the Celts trimmed the deficit to 10-14, while Bodunrin and Cataline contributed kills to keep UST within 13-18. Washington scored seven of the final nine points to take the set 25-16.
In the third set, the Bears jumped ahead 3-0 before UST responded with a block from Sydney Nevill and Morgan Gardner and consecutive points from Carly Lange to pull within 4-6. Bodunrin and Cataline added kills as the Celts stayed within 8-11, as UST continued to battle through the middle of the set. Lange's service ace and another UST point brought the Celts within 13-15, while Cailin Brokaw and Katelyn Marti teamed up for a block that helped UST reach 16-19. Washington then scored six of the final seven points to secure the 25-17 set and complete the sweep.
Cataline led the Celts with seven kills and nine digs, while Bodunrin finished with six kills, one ace, three blocks, and nine digs. Willis added four kills, Stallworth recorded two aces and 10 assists, Brokaw had 10 assists, and Lange finished with 17 digs and one ace. Haydari contributed three blocks, while Nevill added a block as UST finished with 23 kills, five aces, five blocks, 22 assists, and 45 digs.
