HOUSTON, TX – The University of St. Thomas Women's basketball team delivered a wire-to-wire performance Tuesday evening, defeating McMurry University 79–65 at the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center. With the victory, the Celts improve to 15–6 overall and 9–5 in SCAC play.
St. Thomas started strong from the opening tip, exploding with 24 first-quarter points while holding McMurry to just seven. Kenna Gibson connected on a pair of early three-pointers, while Amyia Bowie controlled the offense and attacked the paint. The Celts were locked in defensively, limiting McMurry to just two field goals in the opening period and creating early separation.
The War Hawks responded with more offensive rhythm in the second, but UST continued to answer. Laura Jones came off the bench and provided an immediate spark with timely scoring, and Jaydia Morris added key baskets inside. The Celts maintained their double-digit advantage and carried a 41–24 lead into halftime.
McMurry made a push in the third quarter, scoring 19 points, but St. Thomas stayed composed. Bowie continued to get to the free-throw line, and Gibson and Morris delivered key baskets to halt any momentum swing. UST extended its lead to 63–43 heading into the final period.
Despite a late surge from McMurry, UST remained in control in the fourth quarter. Jones buried two more three-pointers in the final frame, and Bowie sealed the game at the free-throw line, finishing 13-of-16 from the stripe. The Celts' defensive pressure forced key turnovers, and strong rebounding from Macie Whitfield helped secure the 79–65 victory.
Bowie led all scorers with 20 points and added seven assists and six rebounds. Gibson finished with 16 points, connecting on four three-pointers, while Jones contributed 14 points off the bench. Morris added 10 points, and Whitfield anchored the glass with nine rebounds.
