HOUSTON, Texas-- Aryanna Vazquez of University of St. Thomas, a sophomore defender from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Sunday, October 11th.
Vazquez anchored a Celts backline that posted its first shutout of the season in a 3-0 road win over Dallas last Sunday. Setting the tone at the back, she helped St. Thomas shut down the Crusaders' attack from the opening whistle, and the Celts' defensive effort left little room for Dallas to build any real momentum.
The numbers tell the story of just how dominant the group was. Vazquez and the Celt defense limited Dallas to just three total shots, with only one of them on target, making it a quiet afternoon for the Celts' goalkeeper and a statement performance for the unit as a whole.
Her efforts have been a key piece of UST's strong start to conference play. The Celts are a perfect 2-0 in SCAC action, marking the third time since 2022 that the program has opened league play with two wins.
With Vazquez leading the way in the back, St. Thomas will look to keep building on its defensive momentum as the SCAC schedule continues.
