UST Tames the Bulldogs

SEGUIN, TX — St. Thomas Volleyball continued their road trip to compete against TLU. They took the match with a 3-1 win over Texas Lutheran. The Celts improved to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC. The set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-19.

The opening set was a back-and-forth slugfest, but St. Thomas used a string of momentum plays to pull away late. Jada Stallworth's serving helped flip the tempo (including a service ace), Carly Lange added a big service ace of her own and Noor Haydari provided a timely block to halt TLU runs. Mia Medina kept the offense humming with steady sets while Alexis Bodunrin and Jazilyn Davis delivered key kills down the stretch. Bodunrin's finishing swings closed out the set for the Celts, 25-22.

The Celts again settled into a tight set, trading points with TLU. Stallworth and Medina provided several impact assists that swung the momentum in the Celts favor. Bodunrin controlled the right side with a string of kills, ultimately claiming the set.

Texas Lutheran fought back in the third, getting an early separation and forcing St. Thomas to chase. The Celts tried to rally — Stallworth mixed in aces and Bodunrin kept attacking — but unforced errors and TLU's late streak allowed the bulldogs to take the set. UST battled hard, but couldn't overcome the deficit and dropped the third 25-20.

St. Thomas regrouped in the fourth and dominated early. The Celts opened with a fast, aggressive start behind Stallworth's serving and balanced attacking from Bodunrin, Ariana Willis and Davis. Haydari and Tasmine Maxwell contributed at the net to keep TLU off balance, and Medina continued to run a clean offense that created consistent scoring opportunities. UST closed the set with several late kills and smart defense to wrap the match.

Alexis Bodunrin led the Celts with 15 kills, while Ariana Willis and Jazilyn Davis each chipped in seven kills. Jada Stallworth paced the serving attack with four aces and Carly Lange added three aces; Noor Haydari recorded two service aces. At the net, Haydari and Tasmine Maxwell each contributed two blocks and Bodunrin added one. Mia Medina ran the offense with 18 assists and Stallworth finished with 16 assists. Carly Lange anchored the backcourt with 22 digs, followed by Stallworth with 12 and Bodunrin with 11.
