AUSTIN, Texas – After weather delayed the action, the University of St. Thomas Softball team returned to the field at Concordia University Texas and secured a hard-fought 5-4 win over Trinity to open the SCAC Championship Tournament. The win pushes the Celts to 30-10 overall and moves them one step closer to the title.
The game resumed in the top of the second inning after being halted the day before with the score tied 0-0. UST quickly capitalized. Gabby Davila reached on an error by the pitcher, allowing Savana Henken and Zoe Acosta to score and give the Celts a 2-0 lead.
Trinity answered in the fourth inning with three runs to go ahead 3-2, but UST stayed composed. In the fifth, Jaelyn Simmons scored on a wild pitch to tie the game again.
Trinity briefly pulled ahead 4-3 in the seventh, but St. Thomas once again responded under pressure. Chloe Bennett delivered an RBI double to score Simmons and even the game, and shortly after, Lindsey Gonzalez doubled to right field, scoring Isabelle Charles for the go-ahead run.
