HOUSTON,TX – In a dramatic start to their SCAC series, the UST softball team outlasted Austin College in an 11-inning battle, earning a 6-5 walk-off win on Thursday afternoon. With the victory, the Celts improve to 24-10 overall and 20-4 in conference.
Austin College opened the game with an early 1-0 lead after scored on a double in the top of the first. They added two more in the fourth inning to go up 3-0.
But the Celts responded in the bottom of the fourth. ] Delayne Moreno and Maegan Anderson each reached base, setting the stage for senior Lindsey Gonzalez, who delivered a 2-RBI single to center field to cut the lead to 3-2.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Rebecca Archibald got the rally going and came around to score the tying run thanks to a clutch RBI single from Chloe Bennett, forcing extra innings.
Austin briefly regained the lead in the 10th, scoring on a throw during a stolen base attempt. But once again, St. Thomas answered, this time with Samantha Crumrin grounding out to second to bring Archibald home and tie it at 4-4.
Austin pushed ahead once more in the top of the 11th, but the Celts weren't done. Zoe Acosta scored the tying run, and with the bases loaded Ana Zozaya drew a walk to bring home Savana Henken for the walk-off win.
