ST. LOUIS, Mo. – St. Thomas men's basketball team opened its appearance at the Lopata Classic with an 81-73 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater, improving to 3-0 on the season.
The game opened with both teams trading baskets in a high-intensity first half. The Warhawks grabbed early momentum with a three-pointer, prompting a UST timeout to regroup. The Celts responded with a layup from Nicholas Buffalo and a three from Angel Johnson to stay within reach. Despite St. Thomas' push, Wisconsin-Whitewater closed the half strong and took a 41-36 lead into the break.
UST came out of halftime determined to take control. The Celts cut into the deficit with free throws, a layup, and an in-paint jumper from Charles Gitonga. A fastbreak layup from Corey Thompson tied the game at 46, and moments later Thompson knocked down a three-pointer to put the Celts ahead 52-47. St. Thomas continued to build momentum with layups from Reyce Allen and Garrett Rodgers, followed by another big three from Thompson to fuel a 10-0 run. The Celts maintained their pace in the final minutes, closing out the win with key free throws and an energizing dunk to secure the 81-73 victory.
Corey Thompson led the way with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding three steals and two assists. Angel Johnson also finished with 17 points, three steals, and three assists while shooting 7-of-12 from the field. Nathan Kongolo delivered an efficient performance with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
