Celts defeat LeTourneau to earn Saturday split in Sherman

SHERMAN, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas split their two Saturday contests to conclude play at the Austin College Classic this weekend.

UST defeated LeTourneau in five sets before falling to Concordia Texas in another five-set match. St. Thomas ended up playing five sets in three of the Celts' four matches this weekend.

The Celts will have a couple weeks to prepare for their next contests, when they head to Austin on Friday, Sept. 13, where they will face Sul Ross State and Concordia Texas.

St. Thomas 3, LeTourneau 2

The Celts won the first two sets and then fended off a comeback attempt by LeTourneau to claim a thrilling win over the YellowJackets.

Scores of the match were 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 20-25, and 15-13.

Emily Jaroszewski knocked down 14 kills and hit .367 to lead four Celts with double-figure kill totals. Alyssa Ajlouny put away 13 kills, while Kaje Massenburg and Alaina Lanik registered 11 kills apiece.

Lanik and Ajlouny each turned in double-double performances, with Lanik handing out 22 assists and Ajlouny recording 12 digs. Kelsie Walker handed out 30 assists for the Celts, while Kaylyn Latin led the defensive effort with 25 digs.

Concordia Texas 3, St. Thomas 2

St. Thomas led the match after sets one and three, but back-to-back wins by the Tornados in sets four and five gave Concordia Texas the victory.

Scores of the match were 20-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, and 15-11.

Lanik led the way for the Celts with 13 kills and 16 assists. Jaroszewski knocked down 11 kills, while Walker gave out 25 assists.

Latin once again led the defensive effort for the Celts, digging 34 opposition attacks. She led five players recording double-figures in digs, which also included Walker (15 digs), Chelsea Guerrero (14 digs), and Ajlouny and Mariah Regan (13 digs apiece).
