Celts Split Weekend on Last Regular Season Road Trip

HAWKINS and MARSHALL, Texas – Sheridan Hopkins (JR/Galveston, TX) recorded her school-record 12th and 13th straight double-doubles in the University of St. Thomas women's basketball team's 72-51 win at Jarvis Christian and 66-64 loss at Wiley College, this past weekend.

During Friday nights' game at Jarvis Christian, Hopkins scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while shooting 10 of 13 from the floor and 11 of 12 from the free throw line. She also had three steals, three assists and a block.

It was the third win in the last four games for the Celts, who improved to 10-10 overall, 7-6 in the Red River Athletic Conference.

St. Thomas, which will play at Wiley 5:30 p.m. Saturday, went 23 of 27 from the free throw line.

Alexis Castillo had 15 points, reaching double figures for the second straight game. She was 4 of 5 from the floor. Including 3 of 4 from behind the three-point arc. Zariah McInnis (SO/Richmond, TX) had nine points, and Aerial Starks (FR/Houston, TX) added eight points and five boards.

Nektria Duffie had 17 points, and Tierra Sanders 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

On Saturday night in Marshall, Texas, St. Thomas women's basketball team fell short in a comeback bid at Wiley Saturday, losing 66-64.

The Celts (10-11, 7-7 Red River Athletic Conference) trailed by eight in the fourth quarter, but went on a 12-4 run over a 2:47 span to tie the game at 62 on Zariah McInnis's field goal with 32 seconds left. The Wildcats (8-14, 6-8) scored the next four points before Olivia Anga (FR/Rosharon, TX) converted an offensive putback with six seconds to go. But the Celts didn't get another shot, and Wiley held on.

UST's Sheridan Hopkins scored 26 points, and had 10 rebounds for her 13th straight double-double. She was 9 of 19 from the floor. Aerial Starks added 18 points and nine rebounds.

Damonica Franklin scored 14 points and had nine boards, and Brianna Tolliver, Alona Bennett and Armonie Lomax each had 13 points for the Wildcats, who were outrebounded, 49-43.

St. Thomas led by as many as nine in the first half when Starks sank a free throw to cap a 13-2 run. Wiley erased the deficit in the third quarter with an 11-2 run to take a one-point lead. Lamaza Colquitt's three-pointer with 7:10 remaining put Wiley ahead, 51-43.

But after the Celts got within three on a basket by Sydney Hayes (JR/Houston, TX) with 4:15 to play, the Wildcats kicked the lead back to eight. St. Thomas was able to tie the game for the fifth time, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Hayes finished with eight points, six assists and five steals.

UST struggled from the three-point line, going 1-for-12. The Wildcats were 7 of 31. The Celts outscored the Wildcats, 36-28, in the paint. Wiley's bench outproduced St. Thomas, 18-6.

The Celts shot 19 of 22 from the free throw line. Wiley was 11 of 20.

St. Thomas will host LSU-Shreveport at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
