HOUSTON, Texas – St. Thomas women's basketball team authored its biggest win of the season, beating Jarvis Christian, 92-60. The Celts set a season high in points, and won back-to-back games for the first time since November. St. Thomas (5-6, 2-2 Red River Athletic Conference) moved within a game of the .500 mark, while Jarvis Christian (0-14, 0-4) remained winless.
With 6:46 left in the third quarter, the Bulldogs cut the gap to 36-35 following a leak-out basket by Nyesha Fisher. Less than a minute later, Olivia Anga (FR/Rosharon, TX) scored in transition on a find from Sydney Hayes (JR/Houston, TX) to keep the Celts in front by three. Sheridan Hopkins (JR/Galveston, TX)' steal and pull-up jumper, and a basket by Anga following another Jarvis turnover put UST up 10. Hopkins' triple at the 4:09 mark gave the Celts a 51-35 lead. That completed a 15-0 St. Thomas run.
Yazmine Kellough (FR/Oak Ridge)'s three with 1:20 to play in the third gave the Celts a 62-48 lead. Jarvis cut the deficit to 64-51 on a layup by Tierra Sanders to end the quarter.
Kellough knocked down a jumper, and Hopkins scored in transition to bump St. Thomas' lead back to 70-51 to open the final period. Hopkins converted a drop-off from Zariah McInnis (SO/Richmond, TX) to make it 75-53 with 6:02 remaining.
The Celts outscored the Bulldogs, 28-9, in the fourth quarter.
Anga had a season-high 21 points and eight rebounds. She was 8 of 12 from the floor. Hopkins finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double. She also had seven steals and three blocks. Tamera Duncan scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds for Jarvis. Kandice Jackson scored 10.
UST had 40 points off turnovers, while Jarvis managed 12. The Celts outscored the Bulldogs in the paint, 42-24.
St. Thomas shot 40 percent. Jarvis Christian shot 39 percent. UST was 6 of 16 from three-point range. Jarvis was 7 of 16.
Jarvis took an 11-8 lead in the first quarter when Jackson hit a three-pointer. But Hayes answered with a triple and a fastbreak lay-in to put UST up 15-13. Anga's steal and successive three-point play gave the Celts a 20-17 lead after the first period.
Anga had six points and four rebounds in the first quarter. Both teams made seven field goals in the quarter.
Aerial Starks (FR/Houston, TX) converted a three-point play, and Bresha Orange (SR/Longview, TX) buried a triple to put St. Thomas ahead, 32-23, with 2:40 remaining in the first half. The Celts took a 34-28 lead into the break.
Starks scored nine points in the first half. UST shot 12 of 36 from the floor. Jarvis was 10 of 27. Both teams had 22 rebounds in the first half.
Orange finished with 11 points. Starks, Hayes and Kellough each scored nine points.
St. Thomas will host Wiley at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
