Celts Drop Second Game on the Road

TYLER, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team fell on the road to Texas College Saturday, 67-52, despite a monstrous effort from Sheridan Hopkins (JR/Galveston, TX).

Hopkins scored 30 points and had 19 rebounds and three steals, but the Celts (7-9, 4-5 Red River Athletic Conference) couldn't hold on to its halftime lead.

UST struggled shooting, going 15 of 56. Texas College (5-12, 3-6) was 26 of 61. Both teams were 2 of 15 from three-point range.

Hopkins, who reached 30 points for the third time this season, scored with 1:40 to go in the first half to tie the game for the eighth time. She sank two free throws with 39 seconds to play in the half to send the Celts into the break up, 30-28.

Hopkins had 16 points and 11 boards in the first half. The Celts were 13 of 16 from the free throw line. Texas College was just 1 of 3 from the stripe in the first two periods.

St. Thomas went ahead, 34-31, with 7:39 to go when Hopkins sank a pair of free throws. But the Steers grabbed the lead at the 4:24 mark when Paris Townsend scored on a second chance opportunity. The Celts tied the game for the ninth time with 1:08 to play in the third on three free throws by Hopkins.

But Texas College scored the game's next 16 points to take a 57-41 lead with 5:42 remaining, and the Celts never recovered.

Hopkins was the only UST player in double figures. Sydney Hayes (JR/Houston, TX) finished with eight points and two steals. Aerial Starks (FR/Houston, TX) had six rebounds.

The Celts outrebounded the Steers, 43-37.

Taylor Crabtree had 24 points, and Townsend 17 for the Steers.

St. Thomas will play at Huston-Tillotson next Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
