HOUSTON – A total of 64 student-athletes at the University of St. Thomas were recognized as Red River Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2018-19 academic year, the school's final season in the NAIA conference.

The 64 St. Thomas athletes were among 936 student-athletes in the RRAC with an individual cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better. The cumulative grade-point average of all of UST's student-athletes was 2.99, one of the highest in the league.

The news of the UST student-athletes' performance in the classroom allowed the Celts athletic program to leave one final mark of excellence within the RRAC. St. Thomas officially begins its transition to the NCAA's Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in time for the 2019-20 academic year.

That 64 student-athletes were named RRAC Scholar-Athletes capped a 2018-19 season that also saw the Celts win the conference's regular-season titles in volleyball and women's soccer, as well as the postseason RRAC men's basketball tournament championship.

"When you combine the academic success with our three conference championships this year, I'd say it was been a great year for the Celts," UST Athletic Director Todd Smith said.

Monday's announcement of St. Thomas student-athletes being honored for their performance in the classroom comes barely a month after the RRAC also announced that UST was the recipient of the conference's Sportsmanship Award for the seventh consecutive year.
