Peter Hurtgen

Peter Hurtgen

Peter Hurtgen was promoted to Deputy Athletic Director in July 2026. In his current role, he oversees the University's NCAA compliance program, working closely with coaches, faculty, staff, and the NCAA to ensure compliance with Division III and conference regulations. He is responsible for monitoring student-athlete eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, and institutional reporting while fostering a culture of education and integrity throughout the Athletics Department.

In addition to his compliance responsibilities, Hurtgen oversees the scheduling, maintenance, and continued enhancement of the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center while coordinating relationships with off-campus facilities utilized by the Athletics Department. He also leads the University's Recreational Sports program, including intramural sports, recreational trips, and campus recreation initiatives. As the primary advisor for the Celt Sports Association (CSA), he works closely with student leaders to enhance student engagement through athletics and recreational programming. Since the fall of 2023, Hurtgen has also served as the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), helping develop student-athlete leadership initiatives and strengthening communication between student-athletes and the Athletics Department.

Throughout his tenure at St. Thomas, Hurtgen has overseen numerous capital improvement projects within the Jerabeck Athletic and Activity Center, including the installation of new gymnasium bleachers, the renovation of the coaches' offices, the modernization of the conference room, and the transformation of the building's front lobby into a more welcoming space for student-athletes and visitors.

Before his promotion to Deputy Athletic Director, Hurtgen served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Recreation Sports and Facilities, a position he began in October 2021. During that time, he managed athletic facilities, supervised campus recreation programming, expanded intramural opportunities, and coordinated facility rentals and event operations while continuing to support the overall mission of the Athletics Department.

Hurtgen is no stranger to the Celts athletics program. From 2017 to 2021, he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men's basketball team. During his time on the coaching staff, the Celts compiled a 75-29 record and captured three consecutive conference championships. In addition to coaching, he contributed to recruiting, scouting, game preparation, and team logistics.

Prior to joining the University of St. Thomas, Hurtgen spent 11 years as a high school mathematics teacher while coaching basketball, track & field, and cross country. His passion for developing student-athletes and fostering academic success laid the foundation for his transition into collegiate athletics and athletic administration.

Hurtgen earned his Master of Education (M.Ed.) from the University of St. Thomas in May 2026 and received his Bachelor's degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato in May 2010.Â
