HOUSTON, TX— The St. Thomas men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 3–1 victory at home against McMurry University at SaberCats Stadium. The Celts controlled the match early and capitalized on key opportunities to bring their overall record to 1–1–0 on the season.
St. Thomas set the tone midway through the first half when Diego Guerra struck in the 21st minute off assists from Jose Hernandez and Emmanuel Rodriguez to give the Celts a 1–0 lead. The physical battle picked up as both squads created chances, but St. Thomas held strong through the opening 45 minutes to take the lead into halftime.
The Celts wasted no time extending their advantage right after the break, with Diego Martinez scoring an unassisted goal in the 48th minute (47:36) to push the margin to 2–0. McMurry answered back in the 55th minute (54:30) with an unassisted score to bring the game to 2–1. St. Thomas put the match away in the 76th minute (75:26) when Brian Garcia found the back of the net off a setup from Agustin Zuniga to lock in the 3–1 victory.
St. Thomas generated 9 total shots and placed 6 on target throughout the contest. Goalkeeper Max Rodriguez played the full 90 minutes in net for the Celts, recording a save in the victory.
