Celts Take Down Wiley 2–1 in Exhibition

Box Score

HOUSTON, TX— St. Thomas men's soccer defended home turf at SaberCats Stadium, picking up a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wiley University in an exhibition match. The win provided a strong test for the Celts as they continue building momentum for the season.

UST set the pace early in the first half, putting constant pressure on the defense and dominating possession. The work paid off in the 27th minute when Aldo Hernandez found the back of the net to put the Celts on the board. St. Thomas kept up the attack, striking again just four minutes later as Diego Rayo scored off an assist from Hernandez in the 31st minute. The two-goal run gave UST a 2-0 lead heading into halftime after out shooting Wiley 10-2 in the opening period.

Following halftime, the match faced weather delays due to lightning strikes in the area. Play eventually resumed, though official call was made to shorten the game to 80 minutes total instead of the full 90. Wiley managed to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 73rd minute, but the Celts' backline held firm in the final minutes to secure the victory.

The Celts outshot Wiley 10-3, putting six of those attempts on goal while earning seven corner kicks on the night.
