HOUSTON, TX- The University of St. Thomas men's soccer team hosted Texas Lutheran University in a home conference match at SaberCats Stadium. The match was filled with back-and-forth play and strong offensive efforts, but the Celts ultimately fell to the Bulldogs 2-1. With this result, UST moves to an overall record of 8-6-1 and a conference record of 4-5-1.
The first half opened with immediate energy from both sides. The Celts wasted no time applying pressure as
Fernando Lazo fired an early shot just 14 seconds into the game, forcing a save from the Bulldogs' goalkeeper. UST continued to control possession, with
Brandon Delaney and
Brian Garcia each putting up close attempts. Although Texas Lutheran managed to strike first in the 22nd minute with a goal, taking a 1-0 lead, St. Thomas was quick to answer, and at the 28th minute, when
Emmanuel Rodriguez found the back of the net off an assist from
Jovany Garcia to even the score 1-1. The Celts maintained strong momentum for the remainder of the half, showcasing consistent offensive pressure and multiple shot attempts from
Jose Hernandez and
Aaron Rodriguez to keep the Bulldogs on alert. The teams entered halftime tied 1-1.
As the second half kicked off, the game intensified with both squads looking to take control. UST's defense attempted to stand firm on shots from Diego Sanchez and Evan Pacheco to keep the Bulldogs from extending their lead early on. The Celts continued to push forward, as
Jose Hernandez nearly put UST ahead with a powerful shot that hit the crossbar but was saved by TLU's goalie. Despite the Celts' strong defensive stand and multiple substitutions to maintain energy, Texas Lutheran sought out a counterattack toward the end of the half, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage. UST fought hard in the final minutes, with last shot attempt from
Tony Castro, but the Bulldogs held firm to secure the narrow victory.
